In 2010, Auvergn Mainpat Tibet, an association that works closely with Tibetan refugees in the camps of Mainpat in eastern India, raised alarm to Proyectar Sin Fronteras (PSF), informing them of the critical situation of potable water access for this community. As a result, the two organizations decided to establish a joint project to improve potable water access in the community.

About us

In 2010, the Tibetan population in Mainpat notified the Association Aubergne about its urgent need to renovate the hydraulic infrastructure in the Mainpat refugee camp. The inhabitants are consuming water highly contaminated with bauxite, a toxical mineral element used in the fabrication of aluminum; at the same time, water resources are diminishing day by day.

The PSF team decided to participate in the project, contributing its technical experience in design, project management and fundraising in order to create a sustainable system of water resources and management in Mainpat.

Efforts

In the short term, the objective is to strengthen the hydraulic system of the refugee camp and improve the potable water resources. More specifically, the goal is to renovate the tubes, pumps and damaged filters and to line a new well so that the community can access sufficient quantities of potable water.

In the long term, our goal is to ensure that the members of the refugee camps in Mainpat are self-sufficient and don’t need to rely on outside help.

In order to achieve this goal, we are going to employ the following mechanisms:

A water management committee in charge of taking inventory of the hydraulic problems and to set the rates of water use.

Training sessions on maintenance techniques of the hydraulic system.

Carry out awareness campaigns about sustainable management of water and the benefits of having a management committee that has the support of the local private sector and the association Electristas Sin Fronteras.
